Installing Void Linux 2016 and Review on VMware

What is Void Linux?

Void Linux is an independent Linux distribution based on XBPS (the X Binary Package System), which was designed and implemented from scratch. It features a hybrid binary and source package management system which allows users to quickly install, update and remove software, or to build software directly from sources with the help of the XBPS source packages. Other features of the distribution include support for Raspberry Pi single-board computers (both armv6 and armv7), rolling-release development model with daily updates, integration of OpenBSD's LibreSSL software, and native init system called "runit".

Void Linux Features

Void Linux's package manager and build system have been written from scratch. Excluding binary kernel blobs, a base install is composed entirely of free software, but users can access an official non-free repository to install proprietary software. Many packages are compiled against musl, a lightweight alternative libc implementation, in addition to glibc.

Void Linux is based on a rolling-release distribution model. New software is built into binary packages as soon as the changes are pushed to the github repositories. xbps allows users to quickly install, update and remove software; software is provided in binary packages or can be built directly from sources with the help of the XBPS source packages collection.

Currently there are over 6000 optimized binary packages for the x86, x86_64, ARMv6, ARMv7 architectures; also there's support to build (natively or cross compiling) from sources any package easily that is available in the XBPS source packages.

Void Linux uses runit as its init system and service supervisor- a simple and effective approach to initialize the system with reliable service supervision. Void was the first distribution to switch to LibreSSL by default, replacing OpenSSL.
